The Water Tables, 2000
UW and Cascadia Bothell Campus. Washington State Arts Commission. Video Sculptures. 4' x 5' x 3' and 2' x 5' x 3' Fabricated from resin and plexiglass, the tables hold light and video images projected up into the surface, acting as a kind of cerebral reflection pool. A breeding pond. A large plasma screen rests below one sculpture and a nest of three little televisions sit beneath another. Located in the Library lobby of the shared campus, the video sculptures express something about the evolution from books to the screens from which we read.
Curiously, the lobby opens to two wings lined with many many monitors for study. The videography of the water tables is both meditative and inspirational, with images and writings about the wetlands adjacent to the Campus. The campus is sited just above the Riverine Wetlands Restoration, the largest restoration in Washington. Through this restoration the actual water table will be lowered gradually to bring the delicate ecosystem back into balance.
